Gok Wan predicts BCU students will ‘rock the fashion industry’

Style guru Gok Wan, star of Channel 4's "How To Look Good Naked", has praised the talent and creativity of students from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), part of Birmingham City University, following his visit to interview fashion students for his new show, "Gok's Clothes Roadshow".

As part of his new show, which will be screened in the summer he visits nine cities, including Birmingham, to ask real people instead of models, to show off what they’re wearing and discuss high street fashion. Gok invited BIAD students to take part in his show, which aims to prove that Britain is home to the most stylish people in the world and the students from Birmingham City University did not disappoint.

Gok said: “Every one of these students has genuine style, talent, creativity, originality and were fashion savvy. There’s no doubt in my mind that these stars will rock the fashion industry in the near future.”

Retail Fashion Management tutor Alison Rapsey said: “The students were really excited to be invited to take part on Gok’s show. They enjoyed talking to him about how central fashion is to our identities and being part of his new show.”

Gok interviewed Gemma Williams (21), Jessica Ion (19), Rebecca Guy (21), Leon Conaghan (19) and Dustin Goodman (21) for his show, talking to them about what style meant to them, how they defined their individual style and what it might convey about their personality. He also invited all the students who took part in filming at the Gosta Green Campus to strut down the catwalk show in St Martin’s Square.

Student Hayley Porter (21), said: “It was great fun and really good that he was interested in our opinions on style and fashion.”

The most stylish person from each of the cities visited by Gok will battle it out for the crown of Britain’s favourite fashionista, which will see them win an all expenses paid shopping trip to New York.

Leicester-born Gok also praised the city for its fashion, adding: “Birmingham has lots of style,” he said. “I used to come here to the clubs and the shops. And it is even better now, just look at the Bullring.”
